Mourning for the dead in China’s Wenchun Earthquake

Today is the 1st anniversary of China’s Wenchun Earthquake.  The earthquake hit Wenchun this day last year.  Numerous towns and villages lay in ruins in a couple of seconds, tens of thousands of people were killed, more were trapped in the collapsed buildings and even more people became homeless. I shall mourn for the dead and show my respect for the survivors by telling briefly three stories.

A Great Teacher

At ten twelve, 13th, May, 2008, the relief team found the body of Tan Qianqiu, a teacher of Deyan Middle School. He stood dead against a desk with both arms reaching out, covering the desk tightly, under which were 4 little kids, his students, who survived the horrible disaster.

A Brave Lady

Gong Tianxiu, a clerk of the Beichun Agricultural Bank, tore off her own leg which was trapped under a big piece of concrete, and escaped death 73 hours after the quake.

A Respectable Policewoman

Jiang Xiaojuan, a police officer of Jiangyou City, breastfed 9 baby orphans for days, leaving her own to her mom at home.
